Most readers of this blog have no idea what a Jeepney is. If I wasn’t Filipino I probably wouldn’t either, but that goes beyond the point. A Jeepney is a colorfully painted and decorated bus-jeep hybrid only located in the Philippines. Jeepneys were first created out of post WWII American Army Jeeps and are still made and operated today. However, JEEPNEYS is also the music project of hyper tropical time traveler Anna Luisa Petrisko.
I’ve attended some of Anna’s performances in Phoenix when she has been on tour from California or New York. They are super wild and fun. Her songs are full of strange melodies and can be either quite minimal or totally filled to the max with all sorts of sounds. Needless to say the color and excitement of the motor vehicle is also present in the music itself.
I ended up picking up JEEPNEYS’s 7in “Lats Yerk/Herman The Bull”, which was released by Germany’s “Human Ear Music”. It’s quite beautiful, it comes with a postcard, fold out poster, sticker, and the 7inch itself is gold! The A-side song, “Lats Yerk”, is a slowly building minimal triumph with a sample of a woman saying, “You’re Brain is/ You’re Body” and all sorts of other good stuff surrounded by bells and chimes and synthesizer blups. The B-side Herman the Bull, is a slow almost rave like dance slam that puts the listener in a trance. Beyond the beat lie a quirky little toy piano melody, airy vocals, and some clever beeps. Ultimately, this 7in is a success and warrants multiple listens.
